Peach Festival Biglerville PA – August 2021 This is the big Peach Festival at Hollabaugh’s in Biglerville PA (a few miles north of Gettysburg PA). I have never seen so many different peach products! Live Irish music. Free samples! Peach pie and peach ice cream. Peach milkshake! Full peach trees.
Pennsylvania State Capitol Harrisburg PA – August 2021 Beautiful capitol. Interesting lime green colored dome. The rotunda. The first floor is covered in Moravian tile, with many scenes depicting Pennsylvania history. Senate chamber. House of Representatives chamber. Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Supreme Court room rotunda. Impressive doors.
Hershey’s Chocolate World Hershey PA – August 2021 Hershey’s Chocolate World is primarily for children – lots of activities and colors and candy! But we enjoyed it anyway. This is the only activity we did. It was fun, but definitely geared toward children. I took a picture of Hershey’s taking our picture! The curved roof building is Hershey Arena, where Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in an NBA game in 1962. It is the record for most points in an NBA game.
President James Buchanan’s Wheatland Lancaster PA – August 2021 This is Wheatland, home of James Buchanan, our 15th president, who served 1857-1861. He has widely been considered our worst president, primarily due to his responses to the growing hostilities leading up to the Civil War. Rear of the house. Entrance foyer. Dining room. From Buchanan’s cellar, his own 1827 Red Seal Madeira. The label also reads: Per ship “Wanderer” from India Bottled 1832. The room from which he ran his 1856 presidential campaign. Buchanan never married; he was our only bachelor president (Grover Cleveland was a bachelor when he became president, and he was married in the White House while president in 1886). Buchanan’s niece Harriet Lane served as Buchanan’s First Lady while he was president. Prior to his presidency Buchanan served as Minister to the Court of St. James in England. During this time, Harriet impressed Queen Victoria, and the two remained very good friends until the queen’s death in 1901. Western North Carolina Waterfalls North Carolina Highlands – July 2021 Hooker Falls in DuPont State Recreational Forest in Western NC. These falls were featured in the movie Last of the Mohicans.
